Expert plant or tree people? Should I "top" or cut down a ginkgo tree?

My hubby and I are arguing. Please help. The previous owner of our house planted three ginkgo trees in the back yard. I want to keep the trees because they are endangered (and really neat). The problem is that the trees are planted underneath an overhead wire running to our neighbor%26#039;s house. There%26#039;s only one of the trees that is growing too fast. I would like to cut off about 2.5 feet at the very top of this tree. My husband wants to completely remove the tree. The trees are too big to dig up and move, but they have only been planted for about 3-4 years. Is it possible to remove the top 2.5 feet or should we cut down the tree?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

See at this link for it%26#039;s root system.

You can also see on that website that the trees are also cut right down yearly, perhaps that%26#039;s something to think about?
Reply:Well you could always try it and if it doesnt work then remove it.

Most trees, plants you do not want to remove more than 1/3 of the plant when trimming or you may kill it..
Reply:take the tops down so you can keep them. are you sure that a tree company couldn%26#039;t transplant them in another part of your yard once they are topped? ask, they might be able to. if not you%26#039;ll just have to keep them trimmed down if you want them
Reply:Ginkgo%26#039;s endangered? New one on me. If it%26#039;s underneath a power line, DO NOT try to do anything yourself. You need a certified arborist who is specifically trained for working near power lines. I%26#039;m certified to do regular trimming work, but I%26#039;m not allowed to do any work on anything closer then 10 feet to a power line.

Plus, do not top it. The arborist can reduce the canopy, and train it to grow away from the lines for awhile. If they still recommend topping it, remove it. Topping will cause more damage then good.
